According to the email, the excavator sunk so much that rocks were pushed up into the centre pivot, which tore some hydraulic hoses, making recovery very difficult.

I wonder is this shot was set-up. That car doesn't look much like any mine-spec vehicle, and the picture looks too good quality to be from the 60's or 70's. The truck also looks too big to be from that era, or from a quarry.
