I'm not sure what caused this boom failure, but it looks like it might have been a tightline failure. This is where the bucket comes too close to the boom, either damaging the boom directly, or by folding the boom in half through the combined stress coming through the tight drag and hoist ropes.

I run across this photo recently on this site. I believe this to be Peabody Coal Company's Marion 8750 at Black Mesa Mine. It was Marion 8750 D2. I spent over 6 years on it's sister machine. It was Marion 8750 D1 at Peabody coal Company's old Universal Mine in Indiana. I could tell some horror stories about that old machine. I only wish I'd been smart enough to have taken pictures over the years I spent on it.
